Conservation Management Plan for former James Hardie House

Brian McDonald, DFP Heritage and Conservation expert, was commissioned to update the Conservation Management Plan for the former James Hardie House he had written in 2002 by the Owner’s Corporation of 65 York Street.

The Owners Corporation had been advised the Council of the City of Sydney that an updated Conservation Management Plan could enable an award of heritage floor space to be granted.

The building was designed by the architectural firm Robertson and Marks and built in two stages in 1929 and 1936. It is a fine example of the Inter-war stripped Classical style of architecture with elements of Art Deco embellishment.

The Conservation Management Plan sets out a policy framework for the future management and protection of the building’s heritage significance.
